The Old Smithy Back
This typical stone-built house - which has been totally renovated, was the last working blacksmith's shop on Tiree.
It lay unused and neglected from the mid-1950s until it was totally renovated in 2010. It is attached to the owners’ house Creag Mhor in the township of Cornaigbeg. The sea can be seen from the sleeping platform and from the garden seating area. The closest beach at Balephetrish is a 10 to 15 minutes walk away.
The smithy has been totally renovated to a very high standard. The building is well insulated and is heated by electric space heaters.
As can be seen from the internal images the property makes imaginative and full use of what is essentially one room. From the sleeping platform one can lie in bed and look out the gable-end window to the sea and internally down on the main living/dining area.
Living/Dining/Kitchen - the lounge area has a sofa, a Freesat TV with built-in DVD, broadband wi-fi access and a small dining area. The area is open plan. The kitchen is compact but fully equipped with oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge and all the usual small appliances. The shower/toilet area is accessed from the kitchen.
Sleeping Platform - which contains a full-sized double bed with a memory foam mattress, is easily accessed by an “S” winding stair. The general view of our guests is that the ambiance of the space more than compensates for the slight head height restrictions.
Bathroom - has a walk-in shower, WHB, toilet and electric towel rail. An unusual feature is that the washing machine is in the bathroom area because of lack of space in the kitchen. The hot water supply is constant. All towels are provided.
FACILITIES AND SERVICES
The property is ideal for two adults, but babies are also very welcome and a travel cot is available. The hot water supply is constant. All towels, duvets and linen are provided. The Co-op store, bank (RBS) and post office are in Scarinish - 5 miles away.
DIRECTIONS TO THE HOUSE
The Old Smithy is about 5 miles from the ferry terminal. Come up the Pier Road, turn right at the T-junction on the B8068 and head for Balephetrish Bay on the north side of the island. Go past the Kenovay/Airport Road and after another half mile or so turn left at the Cornaigbeg sign. We are the second house on the right.
OUTSIDE SPACE AND PARKING
There is parking right outside the front door and there is a private table/seating patio area looking towards the sea. The back garden has a drying area with an outside tap for rinsing sandy clothes/wetsuits. Bikes etc can be stored in an outhouse.
No smoking. No pets.
