The valley was named by RAF personnel during World War II. It is situated in the south-west of Tiree about one kilometre from the township of Hynish. Lying between Ben Hynish and a rocky ridge to the east, the valley extends some 300 metres to the sea, ending in a shingle beach called Tràigh Balbhaig (pebble beach), which in the 19th century covered half the valley floor.
A prehistoric fort, Dùn na Cleite, occupies the southern end of the rocky ridge, one of the strongest, naturally defensive sites on the island. The artificial defences consist of a complex of walls that restrict access to the summit to a circuitous and easily guarded route.
